SIXSHOT (D-98) |

|

Sixshot's contents |
|
Sixshot
(D-98) was released by Takara at the end of
March,
2002 and retailed for ¥4,980. I
ordered my Sixshot from BigBadToyStore.com
when I returned from my deployment.
I couldn't resist adding him to my collection when I heard that he
transformed into 6 different modes. More modes mean more
playability in my book. Before you look any further, I must state
that the colors of Sixshot on this page may appear tainted (more Bluish
vice Purple) due to poor lighting and photo manipulation. I think
I need to purchase some photography lights/lamps since I just can't get
any decent natural light to peer through my window :)
Sixshot's box measures approximately
14.5"x12"x3.5" and is
your typical cereal box without plastic windows.
All sides of the box show his 6 modes with the back depicting a battle
scene. In the left-hand corner on the back of the box is a picture
and description of the figure which is similar to the style of
tech-specs from the past that identify Sixshot's function/role as a
Destron (Decepticon). What's missing from this is the stats and
decoder.
In the photo above,
Sixshot is arranged in a clear plastic container
in Jet mode with two Laser Guns in their
separate slots. The rest of the contents are in baggies and placed
under the plastic case when inserted into the box. There were no
pre-applied stickers to this figure and since
it isn't an exclusive, I removed them from their sheet and applied them
to Sixshot
for this photo session.
As mentioned above,
there are 6 modes of Sixshot; Jet, Car, Wolf, Tank, Gun, Robot.
More details to each mode will be described in several sections below to
include a 7th mode. Sixshot's function is also known as S.T.A.G.
or Solo Transformer Assault Group.
The instruction sheet was
packaged in a separate baggie and produced like its original release in
'87 which folded into a booklet and printed on laminated paper and
sealed with a purple circular sticker.
| Sixshot
includes the following components: 1. Body (Jet mode)
2. Laser Guns (x2)
3. Sticker Sheet
4. Instruction Sheet
5. Character Card

Laser Guns |
WEAPONS: The only weapons that
are separate from the figure are 2 Laser Guns that are White and measure
approximately 4.25" in length. There is a peg on each gun which is
used to connect to several holes on Sixshot in various modes.

J E T
P L A N E (Star Fighter)
Mode #1 |
|
 |
 |
I will describe each mode in order as it is
listed on the instruction sheet, beginning with Jet mode. Sixshot
is packaged in Jet mode without the Laser Guns attached, and measures
approximately 12.5" long, 4" tall and 11.5" wide. The color scheme is made up of
Purple, White, Lime-Green, Grey, Black, and finally Silver (vacuum
metal). The rub-sign is located on the cockpit and is protected by
a thin plastic film (I've seen used to protect the surface of a new
watch) which can be removed easily.
There are 4 rollers underneath the fuselage to support the Jet.
These rollers are wide and allow for a smooth roll when on a flat
surface. When you first remove the Jet from the packaging, it
isn't quite transformed into Jet mode. The only thing you really
need to do is open up the small wings to a 45° angle creating a V-shape,
then attach the Laser Guns to each peg hole on the main wings as shown
above. Extremely simple! This mode is fairly decent with its
swept wings, Star Fighter similarities, but I think the cockpit is kind of small compared to rest of
the body :P Not to mention that the color scheme doesn't appeal to
me. |

|
JET
TO CAR MODE: To transform
Sixshot from Jet to Car mode, remove the Laser Guns from the main wings.
Fold in the small wings so they are flat on top of each other. Now
fold the main wings forward 5 notches (locking joints). Rotate the
engines (White parts) down 90° so that the wheels are facing downward.
Flip over the figure then flip the main wings upward 90° at the Silver joint
located on the main body. Rotate both arms 180° so that the
Lime-Green parts are facing the rear of the vehicle. Rotate the wheels (Lime-Green parts)
180° to align the wheels. Fold down the main wings 90° back to
their original position--you'll have to adjust the wings slightly so
that they lay flat. Separate the nosepiece (Black parts) and fold
them back to their furthest point. Flip up the White air-intake
which is located on top of the body. Lastly, attach the Laser Guns
to the peg holes on top of the wings Silver joint

Carrier)
Mode #2 |
|
 |
 |
|
The dimensions of the
Battle Car Car is 9.25" long, 3.5" tall and 6" wide. This is a
very odd looking vehicle no matter how you look at it. First, the
wheelbase is too far back as depicted in the photo on the lower
right-hand side. Secondly, what's the deal with the divided grille
and forward-facing wings? I dislike this vehicle mode because it
just looks like it's thrown together and called a car.
The weight of the
vehicle isn't evenly distributed over the 4 main wheels which is why there
is a center roller underneath the body. Actually, there are 2
other wheels located under each arm (between the larger wheels), but
don't actually touch the ground. When you roll the vehicle
on a flat surface, you'll notice that it is top/front-heavy. With
the center roller supporting the extra weight, you can spin the vehicle
without any resistance which is kind of neat. That's about the
best feature in this mode.

CAR TO WOLF MODE: To transform
into Wolf mode, remove the Laser Guns and fold down
the air-intake. Fold out/down the Wolf's head (White part) which
is located on top and just behind the
air-intake 8 or 9 notches. Fold up the main wings 90° at the
Silver joint closest to the
body. Rotate the Lime-Green parts upward 90° so that the wheels
are on top. Rotate the arms downward 90° (Lime-Green parts at the
top) and ensure that the oblong part which is between the arms and body
is rotated upward out of its grooved slot. Rotate the feet 90° so
that the toes are forward. Fold the main wings up 2 notches.
Open the 4 Black doors on the rear legs then separate the legs outward and
rotate the Purple parts 270°. Lastly, secure all 4 doors behind
his hind legs and fold down the Black toes 90°. The results should
look like the photos below.
W O L F / O O K A M I (Wolf
- Creature)
Mode #3 |
 |
 |
|
The dimensions of Wolf
is 8.5" long, 7.5" tall and 6" wide. The illustration on the box
and instruction sheet identifies this figure as "Ookami". I had to
use a Japanese to English translator to verify that the name means Wolf.
His
head looks more like that of a feline than a wolf to me. He has Red
painted eyes and a lower jaw that drops to reveal a Black
painted tongue. His mouth also functions as
the canopy for Tank mode as you'll see later.
There isn't much
articulation in this figure. You can rotate the legs forward at
the shoulder joints which sort of gives Wolf the appearance like he's
ready to leap forward. If you look closely at the photo on the
right, you'll probably see that I have placed the oblong piece between
the shoulders in their "locked" position. I found it easier to
rotate the front legs into this pose when the oblong part is secure vice
upward.
You can also adjust
the wings for "flight" mode as shown in the photo on the right. In
addition, Wolf's head can be raised or lowered.
I didn't take any
photos of Wolf with the Laser Guns since it isn't shown on the
instruction sheet, but I guess you can attach them to the tips of his
wings or to the outer side of his hind legs.
This mode isn't too
bad and I like that fact that you can adjust the wings to simulate a
flying tiger...er, make that a flying wolf :P

WOLF TO TANK MODE: To transform
into Tank mode, fold down the main wings 90° at the Silver joint then fold down Wolf's head
to its original position. Rotate the Wolf's lower jaw to reveal
the Tank's canopy/cockpit. Rotate the Lime-Green parts 180° and
front feet 90° so that the wheels are inward (toes facing out).
Rotate arms/legs, including the oval parts, downward 90° so that the
Lime-Green parts are at the front. Fold
rear Black toes to the original position then open the 4 Black doors
behind the legs. Rotate the small guns out 180° then close the 2
large Black doors. Rotate the Purple legs upward 7 notches at the
Black joint connected to the Purple legs, then rotate the legs even
further upward at the Black & White joint so it rests on
the main body. Fold down the Black nosepiece (behind the knees)
then snap together the Purple legs and ensure that the small Black doors
are perpendicular to the ground.
Next, fold back the main wings and ensure that they are parallel to each other. Lastly,
attach the Laser Guns
to the peg holes on either side of the Purple legs.
T A N K (Ramming Tank)
Mode #4 |
 |
 |
|
The Tank measures
8.25" long, 5.5" wide and 5.5" tall. This mode is one of my favorites but
in my opinion, it looks more like a surface-to-air-missile (SAM) system
than any futuristic tank.
The Tank's weight is supported by 3 small wheels which are notched vice
smooth, so you'll need a textured surface to get a smooth roll out of
this vehicle.
The Lime-Green parts
on the front sort of look like forked plows/shovels used to penetrate
the terrain thus reducing the exposure of the tanks underbelly.
The small and large Laser Guns can be rotated up & down so there is some
good playability in this Tank mode.
|
 |
 |
|
TANK TO GUN MODE: To transform
into Gun mode,
rotate the main wings 90° or 4 notches, separate the Purple legs then
separate the nosepiece (tailpiece in this case) and fold them back. Rotate the Purple parts of the
legs so that they are fully extended, snap the legs together then secure the small Black doors.
Now secure the canopy to its original position and then raise the
air-intake which will be used as the trigger. Fold the wings
upward at the Silver joint closest to the main body then snap the wings
together at the tips. The wings now become the handgrip for the
gun. Now rotate the Lime-Green parts 90° so that the wheels are
inward if you are holding the gun in your hand. Rotate both arms
180° so that the Lime-Green parts are facing forward. Lastly,
rotate the back parts containing the rear wheels 180° (wheels facing
out) and attach the Laser Guns to the peg holes on either side of the
Purple leg parts.
L A S E R G U N (Jet-Propelled
Laser Pistol)
Mode #5 |
 |
 |
|
The measurements for
the Gun is 14" long, 5.5" wide and 8.25" tall.
Okay...it's a Laser Gun. The trigger has some flexibility to
simulate firing, but it would've been nice if a "lights & sound" gimmick
was added, or a cocking mechanism. Overall it isn't a bad mode.

 |
 |
|
GUN TO ROBOT MODE: To transform
into Robot mode, remove the Laser Guns from the barrel. Open the
large Black doors and fold down the small lasers 180° to their original
location, then secure the doors again. Fold down the air-intake
into its original location. Next, unsnap/separate the wings. Rotate the arms
180° or 7 notches so that the Lime-Green parts are facing the rear of
the gun.
Rotate the lower-half of his arms 90° outward then push the White part of each arm upward which should expose each fist
(peg holes are
facing up). Rotate the Lime-Green parts 180°, stand Sixshot onto his feet and fold out the
small Black wings from his chest. While you're there, fold
down the Black panel which hides his head, rotate his head upward, then
secure the panel. Fold down the Black toes, attach the Laser Guns
to his fists, and finally, raise his main wings 2 notches. His
legs can either be kept together or separated slightly...it's your
choice.
S I X S H O T (Robot)
Mode #6 |
|

|
 |
|
Sixshot measures at
12" tall, 6" wide and 7.5" deep (when arms are perpendicular to the
ground). His head is White with Red painted eyes which happens to
be the same color scheme used for Wolf's head.
Sixshot is very well
proportioned and is a sharp looking robot except for his color scheme.
I just don't like the Lime-Green and Purple combination. We all
know that a Black Sixshot (Shadow Mode) has been produced which looks
awesome! If a dual color combination was necessary, I think Black
& White would've been perfect, especially for a Ninja :)
He has limited
articulation which is expected for a figure created in '86. His
arms can be rotated at the shoulder, he can bend at the knees, and his
wings can be adjusted for flight mode. The wings don't look bad
when they are pointed directly behind him, but look better when they're
lying flat against his back.
There are several
locations to attach the Laser Guns when they aren't connected to his
fists. The peg holes on the tips of his wings is a good place to
attach them as well as either side of his lower legs. But if you
decided to fold down his wings flat on his back, then you could attach
the Laser Guns to the peg holes on the Silver joints. In my
opinion, this is the best place for them.

ROBOT TO JET
MODE: To transform back into
Jet mode, remove the Laser Guns from his fists. Now fold down the
Black panel on his chest, secure his head back into its original
position, then fold up the panel. Rotate the Lime-Green parts
180°. Fold in the small wings on his chest so that you can rotate
both arms 180°. Take
the main wings and fold them downward 90° at the Silver joint closest to
the main body. You shouldn't have to adjust the swept wings since
they are already in the correct position (photo above). Fold the toes back into
their original slots. If you had the legs snapped together, go
ahead and separate them. Now open all 4 door behind his legs then
rotate the lower-half of his legs (Purple parts) 180° or 8 notches and snap the
legs together. Secure the 4 doors and fold down the nosepiece 180°
and snap them together. Pull out the White parts or his arms which hides his
fists and then rotate them 180° so that the tracks/stickers are facing
upward. Fold up the small Black wings to a 45° angle and finally, attach the Laser Guns to the peg holes on the top
of each wing.

On page
76 of Figure King (issue #52) magazine, there is an additional mode
identified as "Winged Wolf" that was shown in The Headmasters anime
(episode #24 - The Death of Ultra Magnus). This mode was also
identified in Takara's Transformers Generations book (pg. 26). I
admit that I haven't seen episode #24 or any others for that matter, but
I have seen several screenshots of Winged Wolf. This 7th mode
isn't identified on the instruction sheet but I felt it was necessary to
include some shots of this mode in my review.
WOLF TO WINGED WOLF MODE: To transform
into Winged Wolf mode,
rotate the front feet outward 90° (tank tracks should be aligned).
Rotate the front legs including the oblong joint forward 90°. The
oblong joint should lock into place. Rotate the Lime-Green parts
180° so that the wheels are underneath Wolf. Next, working on the
hind legs, make sure they are snapped together then rotated upward
90° at the second knee joint (Black joint). Fold in the Black toes
90°. To expose the "tail guns", open the large Black doors on the
legs and fold out the guns rotating them 180°. Secure the large
doors to their original position. Fold down the main wing joint
90° then adjust the swept wing 2 notches forward. Finally, attach
the Laser Guns to the peg holes at the tip under each wing. The
results should look like the image above.
In this
mode, there are a total of 5 wheels supporting the weight and located at
the arms (2), chest (1), and legs (2). In this mode, he measures
11.25" long, 2.5" tall and approximately 13" wide.
Another
variation of this mode as shown in several magazines is depicted below.
To transform Winged Wolf into this mode, take the rear legs and fold the
Purple parts downward 90° (4 notches) at the Black joints. Next,
rotate the legs at the White joints upward 90° creating a Z-joint.
In this mode, he measures
10" long, 4" tall and approximately 13" wide.
Overall, Sixshot is a
very decent 6-Changer regardless of the color scheme. I'm happy to
include this toy into my collection and hope that someday I can get my
hands on a Black version! |
